Blinds In An Open Window

If you live in an area with inclement weather such as rain and wind, it’s important to take precautions to protect your home from the elements. While it may be tempting to keep your windows open for fresh air, it’s generally not a good idea to do so when you have blinds in an open window. Here are a few reasons why.

Rain Rain Go Away

Firstly, wind and rain can severely damage a blind. Roller blinds and Venetian blinds, for example, are particularly vulnerable to damage from high winds. If you leave your blinds in an open window during a storm, they could become twisted or even completely torn away from the wall.

Vertical blinds and honeycomb blinds are less susceptible to wind damage, but they can still become dirty or waterlogged if left exposed to the elements.

A while back, a customer contacted me shortly after purchasing a roller blind.  She had inadvertently left the door open where the new blind had just been installed.  She sent a picture of a completely mangled blind, wanting (*praying) to know if it could be repaired.  Obviously I was, sadly, unable to assist and she needed to purchase a brand new blind.

On That Note

Finally, leaving blinds in an open window can be a waste of energy. When your blinds are open, they allow heat to escape from your home.  This can make it more difficult and costly to keep your home warm in the winter. This can lead to higher energy bills and a less comfortable living environment.  The same is true for allowing warm air to escape in the winter.

Solid Options

In summary, blinds can be a useful tool for controlling light and providing privacy in your home.  However, it’s generally not a good idea to leave them in an open window during inclement weather such as rain and wind. Doing so can lead to damage to your blinds and loss of heat and warmth
